Air Slide Blockage & Fabric Blinding - Causes, Solutions & Best Practices

Air slide blockage and fabric blinding is the most common failure in fluidized conveying, where powder flows on air down a gentle 6 to 10 degree slope in cement, power, and alumina plants. When moisture, fines, or debris blind the permeable fabric, fluidization collapses, material stalls, and blower power climbs as resistance rises. UGES graded fabrics and balanced aeration keep powder flowing.

Understanding Air Slide Conveyor Blockage and Fabric Blinding

Air slides convey fine powders such as cement, raw meal, fly ash, and alumina down a gentle slope by passing low-pressure air through a permeable fabric to fluidize the material. The whole principle depends on uniform air passing through a clean fabric, so anything that blinds or damages the fabric breaks the conveying action. Moisture is the primary culprit: damp powder clumps and clogs the fabric pores, while condensation from un-dried or cold air does the same from below, and foreign debris or metal fragments settle on the fabric and block sections. Tears or poor seams create localized air jets, or air columns, that channel air and leave the rest of the bed unfluidized. As the fabric blinds, fluidization becomes uneven, material accumulates and blocks the slide, and the blower works against rising resistance so power consumption climbs. A blocked air slide on a critical silo or kiln feed line stalls production, and clearing and re-fabricking it during an unplanned stop typically costs a plant Rs 4 to 12 lakh (about US$5,000 to 14,000 or GBP 4,000 to 11,000) per event in lost output and labour.

Cost of Inaction
A partly blinded air slide limps along with reduced flow and rising power until it blocks completely and stops the line. Continuing to run damp or dirty air through a degrading fabric accelerates the blinding, and the channeling from tears spreads, so flow becomes progressively more erratic. An unplanned air slide blockage on a silo or kiln feed cascades into mill or kiln disruption, and emergency fabric replacement and clean-out cost far more than the dry air, clean fabric grade, and sealing that prevent blinding in the first place.

Root Causes

Root Cause 1

Moisture Clogging the Fluidization Fabric

Damp powder clumps and packs into the pores of the permeable fabric, and condensation from un-dried or cold conveying air does the same, until the fabric can no longer pass uniform air. Cement, raw meal, and fly ash are especially sensitive, and once the fabric is blinded fluidization collapses and the material stalls.
Root Cause 2

Debris, Tears and Channeling

Foreign objects and metal fragments settle on the fabric and block sections, while tears or poorly made seams create localized air jets that channel air through one path and leave the rest of the bed unfluidized. The uneven air distribution that results causes material to accumulate and block the slide.
Root Cause 3

Insufficient or Unbalanced Aeration

An undersized or poorly distributed air supply, or a leaking plenum, fails to maintain the uniform low-pressure air the fabric needs across the full length of the slide. The far end loses fluidization first, material settles, and the resulting resistance drives blower power up while flow drops.

Engineering Solutions

UGES Air Slide Fluidization Fabrics

Correctly Graded, Abrasion-Resistant Fabrics

UGES specifies air slide fabric grade and permeability to the powder and air conditions, using fabrics that resist abrasion, clogging, and chemical attack while passing uniform air. Properly graded and tensioned fabric maintains even fluidization and resists the blinding that stalls standard installations.
UGES Air Slide Conveyors

Sealed Plenum and Balanced Aeration Design

UGES engineers the plenum, air volume, and distribution so that uniform low-pressure air reaches the full length of the slide, with sealed joints that prevent leakage and balanced aeration that holds fluidization to the far end. This removes the dead zones where material settles and blocks.
UGES Air Slide Aeration and Blower Packages

Dry-Air Supply and Moisture Control

UGES pairs air slides with correctly sized, dried, and where needed heated air supply so that no condensation reaches the fabric, keeping the pores open. Combined with inlet protection against debris, this addresses the moisture and contamination that cause most fabric blinding.
